Italian priests' secret mistresses ask pope to scrap celibacy rule

((Oh, brother! Talk about a sign of the times....))

Dozens of Italian women who have had relationships with Roman Catholic priests or lay monks have endorsed an open letter to the pope that calls for the abolition of the celibacy rule. The letter, thought by one signatory to be unprecedented, argues that a priest "needs to live with his fellow human beings, experience feelings, love and be loved".

1921 slaying of Catholic priest gets renewed interest

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (RNS) The 1921 murder of the Rev. James E. Coyle on the front porch of his rectory was no ordinary slaying. Involved were the anti-Catholic Ku Klux Klan, a future Supreme Court justice and a preacher’s daughter who secretly married a Puerto Rican.

In her book “Rising Road: A True Tale of Love, Race and Religion in America,” Ohio State University law professor Sharon Davies digs deep into the Coyle’s murder—and the dark chapter of anti-Catholicism in American history.

About the Memorial Day Site www.usmemorialday.org

This site was created to help promote the return of the original intent and meaning back to Memorial Day, to be a central point for finding information on the day, and to provide an online community for people to share their feelings, pride, respect and honor for those that gave their all. This site also promotes restoring the traditional day of observance of Memorial Day to the 30th of May.

Why is this needed? Memorial Day started off as a somber day of remembrance, a day where we in America go to cemeteries and place flags or flowers on the graves of our war dead. It is a day where we remember our ancestors, our family members, our loved ones who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

But now, too many people "celebrate" the day without more than a casual thought to the purpose and meaning of the day. How do we honor the 1.8 million that gave their life for America since 1775? How do we thank them for their sacrifice? We have 364 other days to celebrate and enjoy the freedom and life that we have because of their sacrifice. As Mr. Schelp says, "it's only by actions that we can repay those who have come before us." Let us take just one day to remember.

Check out the site & see what you think! :)

The Rector's Message from St Philomena's Official Shrine

Dear Devotees of our beloved Saint Philomena,

On this wonderful occasion of the 25th of May – the discovery of the Wonder Worker, Powerful Intercessor with God, and beautiful Virgin Martyr for our faith, Saint Philomena – I am very delighted to announce the publication of my new book. There could be no other fitting date to announce this book than on this special and significant anniversary of Saint Philomena’s divine arrival into our world at a time when the Christian community needed her the most. In God’s loving and protective way, He sent Saint Philomena to bring us renewed hope and focus on the virtue of purity and remaining steadfast to our devotion to Christ. To this day, He continues to pour out His mercy and healing power to those who come in contact with the Sacred Relics of Saint Philomena.

VIETNAM Catholics protest in Cau Ram over historic church turned into flats - Asia News

VIETNAM
Catholics protest in Cau Ram over historic church turned into flats

The Vietnamese government had recognised the area as a ‘memorial site’ because it was damaged by US planes. Local officials have signed a deal with a contractor worth millions of dollars.

What is happening in Cau Ram parallels what happened last July in Tam Toa, another so-called ‘memorial site’, a place partially destroyed by US bombs, but never returned to the diocese, and now in the process of being transformed by a new real estate project.

In Catholic circles, the attitude taken by Vinh authorities is also related to the resignation of Mgr Kiet, archbishop of Hanoi, who quit for health reasons. He was a staunch defender of Church rights, in addition to a supporter of religious freedom. The **Communist regime**, which saw his resignation as a “victory”, now feels free to go ahead with its bullying.

CHINA - VATICAN Our Lady of Sheshan, persecution and division - Asia News

On May 24 last, feast of Our Lady Help of Christians, Chinese Catholics at home and around the world prayed for the Church in China, according to the indications laid out by Benedict XVI in his letter of June 2007, where he called for a World Day of Prayer for the Church in China on May 24, the feast day of Our Lady of Sheshan, the national shrine on the outskirts of Shanghai.

Sheshan has always been a place where underground and official Christians and have come together in devotion to Mary. The idea of the Pope, contained in his Letter and again repeated on the feast of Pentecost, is that "faithful in China pray so that the unity among themselves and with the universal Church will deepen more and more and that the Catholics of the world - especially those who are of Chinese origin - join them in prayer and charity".

Baby Almost Cremated Alive: Where the Road of Abortion Leads - U.S. News -

WASHINGTON, DC (Catholic Online) - Sometimes there just isn't an adequate adjective.

What is the word to describe a baby, aborted at 7 months, being placed in a box with cotton wool stuffed in his mouth and sent to the furnace of a crematory -- alive?

Horrifying?  Not even close.  Shocking?  A paltry description.  What is the word?

Evil.  Depraved.  Malevolent.  Wicked.  Those words are a good fit.  This unspeakable evil took place in China's Guangdong Province.  Just as this baby was about to be thrown into the fire, the mortuary worker heard him cry.  The worker was startled by the sound and stopped to open the box and discovered the baby moving, choking on the cotton stuffed in his mouth.  The worker cleared his mouth and the baby breathed peacefully.

Cohabiting couples barred from receiving Communion - bishops

Cohabiting couples should not receive Holy Communion, the bishops said in a statement yesterday.
The bishops said the Church does not impose this sanction as a punishment, but because "the way of life" of such people violated the sacrament of marriage.
The Church would continue to offer such couples spiritual help and encouraged them to go to Mass, Archbishop Paul Cremona and Gozo Bishop Mario Grech said.
"However, the Catholic Church insists that couples who live together without being married should not receive Holy Communion," they said.

Polish priests rebury Copernicus as hero after astronomer's remains found in unmarked grave

FROMBORK, Poland - Nicolaus Copernicus, the 16th-century astronomer whose findings were condemned by the Roman Catholic Church as heretical, was reburied by Polish priests as a hero on Saturday, nearly 500 years after he was laid to rest in an unmarked grave.
His burial in a tomb in the cathedral where he once served as a church canon and doctor indicates how far the church has come in making peace with the scientist whose revolutionary theory that the Earth revolves around the Sun helped usher in the modern scientific age.

Plunge in US equities remains a mystery

By Michael Mackenzie and Henny Sender in New York

Published: May 7 2010 18:49 | Last updated: May 7 2010 20:01

The day after $1,000bn was briefly wiped off the market value of US equities, traders were still trying to work out what caused share prices to plunge and then rebound so dramatically in a matter of minutes.

The conventional wisdom held that an incorrectly typed sell order – one that confused “billions” for “millions”, for example – was the likely culprit.
